A drum circle is a group of persons, any number is fine, gathered together to make music on anything that can be used as a drum. People have been doing this for as long as there have been people. They are there to tune into the world's natural rhythms. They are there to counteract the stresses that accompany life. They are there to reinvigorate themselves, to become disambiguated.
Drum circles may include voice and movement as well as percussion. They are experiential not performance oriented. No one is judged. The circle is a metaphor for the relationships within the circle, all have equal input, no one is leader. The makeup of the group as well as the instrumentation and skill of the facilitator determine what will take place.
A facilitator guides the circle by providing the circles individuals with awareness of themselves through suggested rhythmic expression. The parts played and the music made are all created by the circle with guidance from the facilitator.

Rhythms: Humans are biological creatures with rhythmic physiological processes operating at different time scales, ie circadian, hormonal, respiratory, cardiac, vascular, autonomic, and cellular.
All these rhythms effect and are effected by each other.

Autonomic nervous system, heart rate rhythms and cardiovascular-respiratory coordinations correspond to both cardiac and multiple organ health status.
Circadian rhythms effect cell and tissue growth both healthful and cancerous.
And ultimately there are links between the autonomic nervous and circadian systems.
Drum Circles: Drumming alleviates self-centeredness, isolation, and alienation, creating a sense of connectedness with self and others.
Drumming provides a secular approach to spiritual perspectives.
Drumming: Drumming is intimately tied to our bodily rhythms both by expressing and by modifying them.

Drumming has physiological effects. It increases heart rate and blood flow just like an aerobic exercise.
Drumming engages both the rational left brain and the intuitive right brain.
Drumming enhances healing through inducing relaxation and enhancing theta-wave (4 to 8 Hz) production and brain-wave synchronization.
Drumming produces pleasurable experiences, enhanced awareness of preconscious dynamics, release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self.
